Why an internship with the Minnesota Vixen?

Women's sports are a rapidly growing industry and offer an exciting opportunity to work at the grassroots level. Through an internship with the Vixen, students will gain real-world experience that utilizes the knowledge they gained in the classroom while enhancing their portfolios.  It allows the students to take an important step in establishing themselves as practicing sports managers.

Goals of the internship:

Our internships aim to develop a diverse, energetic, creative-thinking intern that encompasses a wide variety of ‘hands-on’ experience. We offer a customizable internship program for every student’s experience by providing practical opportunities for developing skills, strategies and job experience in the field of sports business

Qualifications:

 Qualified individuals will be friendly, outgoing, creative, and self-motivated.  Good organizational skills and being able to work independently is a must.

More about our Internships:

We have different types of internships that involve business operations, social media, marketing, sports journalism and coaching with a variety of time commitments. The majority of interns will be working remotely and be required to attend Google Meet meetings every other week in addition to being present at all home games.
  • Game Day Operations Internships:

The game day internship entails contributing to the planning, strategy, and execution of a specific aspect of the game day.   There are 3-4 home games a season plus potentially 2 home games during playoffs. The intern will actively engage in planning meetings with the aim of providing input and helping shape a specific area. Subsequently, they will take on responsibility for that particular area on game day. This provides an excellent opportunity to include specific accomplishments on your resume.
    • Examples of specific areas
      • Vendor Relations
      • Kid Zone games and activities
      • Merchandise Display
      • Game Day Visualization Squad
        • Photos and media output to social media platforms
      • Admissions Control Team
      • Game Day Branding Strategy
 
  • Social Media internships
The Vixen have a strong social media presence and are looking to grow even more. Social media interns enhance current social media outlets or develop other under utilized social media by helping develop and implement social media campaigns and develop content. Knowledge of social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok is required.  
  • Marketing/Sports Journalism
The marketing and sports journalism internship is flexible. There are opportunities to write and publish online materials about the team, such as player spotlights, game previews as well as engage with local media in covering the Vixen and writing press releases. Marketing interns may also work on fan engagement projects or develop promotional materials for the Vixen such as highlight reels.  
  • Project Based Internships:
This is a distance learning opportunity for self-motivated individuals to work independently on projects.  These can be limited short term projects that allow the intern to gain real-world experience and develop materials for their portfolio. Interns will meet with project managers on a regular basis and meet deadlines.
    • Examples of projects
      • Player bios- Help write, collect and update player bios for the website.
      • Ticket sales- Market and target groups to attend Vixen home games.
      • Media Relations- develop media contact list, help write press releases, email media contacts, organize Vixen appearances.
      • Promotional nights- Organize a promotional night, for example military night. Arrange for Color guard, Guest for coin toss, Vet Tix, advertise/ticket sales to vet groups.
      • Videography/Highlight reel- Utilize Hudl or other formats to create videos for use at events and on YouTube.
      • Alumni relations- Locate and increase Vixen alumni involvement at Vixen games and events. Develop ways to honor alumni for example on Wikipedia add an all time roster.
  • Operational Internships
Our operational internships are a longitudinal experience.  The intern will meet regularly with team leadership (via google meet) and contribute to operational projects that one encounters running a sports organization.   Interns will gain hands-on experience with business operations and gain real-world experience. Applicants for the operational internships should be motivated, have good communication skills, and be able to work independently as needed. Experience with Microsoft Office products preferable.
  • Coaching Internships:

This internship involves the intern with the coaching side of operations.  You will assist the coaching staff at practices and during games.  Some travel may be required.
    • Examples of coaching internship activities
      • Assisting with drills
      • Utilizing Hudl for film
      • Tracking player attendance
      • Game day sideline assistance
